Print Options

Copies and confirmation, duplex, eco mode, black-and-white, the vector and raster print paths, and three output options.

The settings in the bottom bar determine how the selected pages print. They all reflect faithfully in the preview.

Copies and confirmation

You set the copy count from the bottom bar. Deste counts copies itself (collated: each copy prints as a full set).

If the copy count is greater than one, a confirmation appears before printing to guard against paper waste; it clearly shows how many distinct pages times how many copies make how many total sheets, and the target printer.

Duplex (double-sided)

There are three options:

  • One-sided — each page on its own sheet.
  • Long edge — double-sided, flipped on the long edge (portrait book binding).
  • Short edge — double-sided, flipped on the short edge (calendar/notepad style).

Deste requests duplex not by shuffling pages, but at the printer-driver level (DEVMODE); the physical flipping is done by the printer itself. For real duplex, your printer must support it in hardware.

Eco (saving)

Eco mode lightens the page’s pixels toward white before printing, reducing toner/ink use. On laser printers, lighter tone = fewer dots = less toner. There are four levels:

Level Effect
Off Untouched.
Light Slight lightening.
Medium Noticeable saving.
High Strongest saving (lightest output).

The preview shows the saving faithfully, so you balance readability against saving before printing.

Black-and-white

Black-and-white renders the pages in grayscale (no colored ink on a color printer). The preview switches to grayscale too.

Deste chooses print quality smartly:

  • When no filter is active (black-and-white and eco off), pages print as vector: pdfium draws text and vectors directly at the printer’s resolution — Word/Adobe-grade sharpness, no raster blur.
  • When black-and-white or eco is on, since these are pixel operations, the page is rendered and printed as raster (an image).

That’s why you get the highest quality when you don’t use a filter.

Preview size

The size slider in the bottom bar only changes the size of the cards on screen; it has nothing to do with printing.

Three output options

  • Print — sends the selected pages directly and silently to your default real printer. (Deste never prints to its own printer.)
  • Print with dialog — opens the standard Windows print window, pre-filled with your in-app settings (default printer, duplex, copies); the choice is yours.
  • Save PDF — merges the selected pages into a single PDF. You can also compress while saving; see Saving as PDF and Compressing PDFs.
